1. Characters=meanings, not pronounciations

Before we try to understand what pinyin is and why it is so important for Chinese learning, we need to know that the Chinese language is a pictographic language. The look/shape of a Chinese character is directly associated with its meaning, but has nothing to do with its pronunciation.
